The Guinness World Records organization has recognized Son Doong Cave as the world’s largest cave, but awarded this title to the British Royal Cave Association, although the organization itself mentioned that the first person to discover the cave was a Vietnamese farmer named Ho Khanh.
According to the Vietnam Record Organization, this recognition is unreasonable. Regarding this, Quang Binh province has sent a document to the Guinness Record Organization, but has not received a response so far.
Son Doong Cave is the largest natural cave in the world, located in the Phong Nha – Ke Bang cave complex and was formed about 2-5 million years ago. The cave is 200 meters wide, over 150 meters high, and at least 6.5 kilometers long. The length may be even deeper, however, due to technical limitations, explorers from the British Caving Association have not been able to go all the way down to determine how long the cave is.
With such a size, Son Doong Cave has surpassed Deer Cave in Malaysia’s Gunung Mulu National Park (with a height of 100m, a width of 90m, and a length of 2km) to occupy the position of the largest natural cave in the world. In addition, some sections of Son Doong Cave are as large as 140m x 140m, including stalactites up to 14m high. Scientists have recorded that there are sections of the cave with a width of about 91.44m, a cave dome nearly 243.84m high, which can accommodate a 40-storey building. In the cave, researchers also found a 2.5km long underground river and stalactites up to 70m high.
